Frequently asked questions

Big choice.
Honest answers.

Everything future students and families ask us about ICM—from AI and creativity to study load, international opportunities, costs and careers.

Before you choose

Know what to expect.

ICM is a three-year, 180-ECTS professional bachelor at The Media School, Thomas More Mechelen. These answers give you a clear first picture; personal situations such as admission and exemptions are always assessed individually.

Future-proof skillsIs AI a threat or an opportunity for a communication programme?+

AI is changing communication work, but it makes strategic judgement, creativity, ethics and human insight more—not less—important. At ICM, you learn to use AI critically and responsibly for research, ideation, content and production while developing the skills that remain distinctly human: understanding audiences, making choices, collaborating and creating meaning.

The degreeWhat kind of degree is ICM?+

International Communication and Media is a three-year, English-taught professional bachelor programme at Thomas More University of Applied Sciences. The programme represents 180 ECTS and combines academic foundations with applied projects, professional feedback and an international internship.

CreativityDo I need to be creative or already know design and video?+

You do not need a finished portfolio or advanced production skills before you start. Curiosity, willingness to experiment and openness to feedback matter most. You gradually learn visual design, writing, audio, video and digital production alongside strategy and research.

Study loadHow difficult is the programme?+

ICM is achievable, but it is a full-time bachelor programme. You combine theory, research, creative production, presentations and teamwork. Students who attend consistently, plan assignments early, practise their skills and ask for feedback give themselves the strongest chance of success.

Weekly scheduleWhat does a typical week look like?+

A typical schedule has approximately 20 hours of classes, workshops and project coaching per week. The exact timetable varies by semester. You also need time outside class for preparation, group projects, production work and study, so the total workload is comparable to a full-time programme.

CostsWhat budget should I expect beyond tuition fees?+

Besides the official tuition fee, plan for a suitable laptop, study materials and occasional project or production costs. International activities may involve travel and accommodation. Costs depend on your choices and destination, and Erasmus+ funding may help with eligible international experiences. Always check the current official fee information before enrolling.

ExemptionsCan I receive exemptions based on previous studies?+

Possibly. Thomas More assesses exemptions individually using your transcript of records, course descriptions and previously obtained credits. If exemptions are granted, the study counsellor or ISP coach helps propose a feasible programme that may combine courses from different phases.

International projectsWhat are BIPs and Expedition Europe?+

A Blended Intensive Programme, or BIP, combines online collaboration with a short international project week. In Phase 1, students who choose Expedition Europe may work at one of around 50 partner universities—from Helsinki to Lisbon and Budapest to Vilnius—in blended teams with students from different institutions and cultures.

Study abroadCan I study abroad with Erasmus?+

Yes. In Phase 2, you can apply for a semester at one of Thomas More’s partner universities or choose an international minor in Mechelen. Eligible students may apply for Erasmus+ funding, and the programme’s international coordinator guides you through the options and application process.

Professional practiceIs an internship part of ICM?+

Yes. In Phase 3, you complete at least 15 weeks of full-time professional practice in an international context. The internship lets you apply your graduation track, build a network and develop evidence of your professional skills before graduating.

CareersWhat jobs can I do after ICM?+

Your options depend partly on your graduation track. Graduates can work in branding, advertising, campaigns, PR, public affairs, corporate communication, content strategy, community building, social media, media production and audience engagement. Typical roles include brand strategist, account executive, communication officer, PR consultant, content strategist, community manager, project manager and creative planner.

Further studiesCan I continue studying after ICM?+

Yes. ICM is designed to prepare you for professional practice, but your learning does not have to stop there. Depending on the programme and your previously obtained credits, you may be able to complete another professional bachelor through a shortened route. Thomas More and The Media School also offer focused postgraduate programmes such as AI for Media, School of Creativity and the Dutch-taught Belgian Advertising School in Antwerp.
